Cardinals Upset Aggies

LAWTON, OKLAHOMA – The University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis team pulled off an impressive upset victory at #18 Cameron University on Friday, 5-4 in Lone Star Conference action. (Box Score)

The Cardinals (10-9, 2-3) entered the match ranked #30 in the nation and took advantage of strong doubles play.  Nicole Karaklis (San Antonio/Laurel Springs HS) and Malisa Vatanadilok (San Antonio/Bridgeway Academy) knocked off Florencia Tornero and Laura Winter, 8-2 at #2 doubles.  Jennifer Betancourt (Valencia, Venezuela/La Salle Guaparo) and Taryn Strahl (San Antonio/Churchill HS) added an 8-4 win at #3 doubles over Antonia Moberg and Elvira Sholles.

In singles play, the Aggies (15-6) won at #1 and #2 behind their dynamic duo of Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber who also accounted for the team's lone doubles win. 

The Cardinals responded by winning three of the final four matches.  Strahl and Betancourt each won easily in straight sets at #4 and #6, respectively.  The match came down to a three-setter between Andi Botha (Pretoria, South Africa/Akrikanas) and Sholles.  Botha won the first set, 7-5, but Sholles battled back to win the second set, 7-6 in a tie-breaker.  Botha came back in the third set and dominated from the outset for a 6-1 win to clinch the match for the Cardinals.

This was the final regular season match of the season.  The Cardinals will likely be matched up with the Aggies again in the first round of the LSC Tournament on April 19 at the Southlake Tennis Center.
