Big Run Helps Cards

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – A 17-0 second half run catapulted the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team to a victory over visiting Lone Star Conference rival Texas Woman's on Wednesday night, 58-40 at the McDermott Center. (Box Score)

The Cardinals (14-6, 10-4) and Pioneers (6-13, 4-9) played a slow-paced game in the first half.  Neither team could find the range on their shots and both shot under 25 percent for the half.  UIW took a slight 21-18 lead into halftime, but then exploded out of the gates in the second half.

After each team scored a bucket to start the half, the Cardinals went on a 17-0 run encompassing a total of 5:01.  The Cardinals forced the Pioneers into seven turnovers during that stretch and went 6-of-9 from the field.  Ify Mora's (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) steal and layup gave the Cardinals a 40-20 lead with 13:40 remaining in the game.

The Pioneers responded with a 12-1 run of their own over the next 5:14.  This time the Cardinals were the ones turning the ball over as they gave it away seven times in that stretch.  TWU closed to within nine points with 8:26 to play after a pair of free throws by Barbara-Scott Kolb.
The Cardinals regained control of the game with a quick 8-0 run and they cruised to the victory.

UIW finished the game shooting 34.0 percent from the field after making only 22.2 percent of their shots in the first half.  They were 4-of-13 from three-point range and 18-for-23 at the foul line.  Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) led the team with 15 points and grabbed five rebounds.  Mora finished with 14 points, five boards and three steals for her third straight game in double figures.  Ashlyn Green (Irving/Irving HS) added a double-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.  Michelle Hale (Albuquerque, NM/Rio Grande HS) just missed a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.  They team pulled down 19 more rebounds than TWU, but committed two more turnovers.

The Pioneers shot 27.7 percent from the field, were 1-of-12 from three-point range and made 13-of-21 from the foul line.  Rebekah Cluley led the team with nine points while Ria Pateraki added three blocks.

The Cardinals are back in action on February 13 at home against Texas A&M-Commerce.  Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
