SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word hosts Lone Star Conference rival Abilene Christian on Wednesday night in a basketball doubleheader at the McDermott Center. The women's game starts at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
The UIW women's team enters the contest with a 16-8 record and 12-6 mark in conference play. Seniors
Katy Cooke (Marble Falls/Marble Falls HS) and
Ashlyn Green (Irving/Irving HS) will be playing the final home game of their careers.
Cooke was a second team all-conference selection last year and was honorable mention as a sophomore. She has 731 points, 261 assists, 105 steals and 99 three-pointers in her three-year career.
Green earned All-LSC Tournament Team honors last year after averaging 16.0 points in three tournament games. She has 606 points, 246 rebounds and 144 steals in her two-year career. She leads the LSC with 3.4 steals per game this year.
The Cardinals lost to the Wildcats (20-4, 15-3) on January 15 in Abilene, 76-65. ACU has four players scoring in double figures including Mack Lankford who leads the team with 14.5 points per game.
On the men's side of things, the Cardinals (13-11, 9-7) are fighting for the #3 seed in the Lone Star Conference. They have three players appearing in their final home game,
Lyn'Dale Brown (San Antonio/Judson HS),
Isai Pina (McAllen/Memorial HS) and
Dionelle Rucker (San Antonio/New Life Christian Academy).
Brown has been a two-year starter at point guard for the Cardinals. He has accumulated 471 points, 237 rebounds, 177 assists and 104 steals in his career. He leads the LSC with 2.2 steals per game this year.
Pina is a three-year member of the Cardinals who has appeared in 18 games in his career. He scored a career high 13 points in a win over Ecclesia last year.
Rucker is also in his second year with the Cardinals. He leads the LSC with 18.0 points per game and is in the top six in rebounding and field goal percentage. He has accumulated 712 points, 281 rebounds and 70 steals while shooting 56.7 percent from the field for his career.
The Cardinals lost at Abilene Christian, 93-76 on January 15 the first time the teams met this year. The Wildcats (11-13, 5-11) boast the second leading scorer in the conference, Eric Lawton who is averaging 16.9 points per game. ACU has been a little unlucky this year posting only a 4-8 record in games decided by five points or less while the Cardinals are 8-2 in similar games.
