AUSTIN, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team will travel north to Austin to take on St. Edward's University in a non-conference doubleheader on Friday that is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
After splitting a doubleheader with Texas Lutheran last week in Seguin, the Cardinals (5-4) have yet to play at home this season. As a team, Incarnate Word is hitting .295 and is averaging 4.4 runs per game. Third baseman
Monica Acuna (San Antonio/Holmes HS) leads the Cardinals with a .444 batting average along with six runs and 10 RBI's. She also slugged a pair of home runs at TLU. Center fielder
Alex Zepeda (Sinton/Sinton HS) is hitting .375 and has a team high five stolen bases.
Senior pitcher
Briana Sanchez (San Antonio/Marshall HS) was named the Lone Star Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday. Sanchez picked up both of the Cardinals' wins last week and now sports a 4-0 mark on the season and a 1.09 ERA.
The Hilltoppers (6-3) appear to be evenly matched with the Cardinals and are hitting .290 and averaging 4.4 runs per game. Faith Roberts leads St. Edwards with a .471 batting average and four doubles while contributing six RBI's. Hilltopper pitcher Sarah DeBrow is currently 3-3 with a 3.57 ERA.
The last time the Cardinals met up with the Hilltoppers was on February 3 in the St. Mary's Tournament, where they walked away with a 4-2 loss.
