SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word's McDermott Center will be the site of a key Lone Star Conference basketball doubleheader on Wednesday night. UIW hosts Texas A&M-Commerce with the women's game slated for 5:30 p.m. and it will be followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
In the women's matchup, the Cardinals (14-6, 10-4) have won five of their last six games and are currently in fourth place in the conference. One more win would secure an LSC Tournament berth. Senior
Ashlyn Green (Irving/Irving HS) leads the team with 11.6 points and 3.4 steals per game. Overall, the team leads the LSC in scoring defense (56.3/game), free throw percentage (72.7), steals (11.1/game) and turnover margin (+5.55).
The Lions (7-12, 5-9) have scuffled lately with three straight losses. They are led by post player Breanna Harris who is averaging 14.6 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. The team is shooting only 34.5 percent from the field, but leads the conference in rebounds per game (42.6). They defeated the Cardinals, 60-51 in Commerce on January 2.
The UIW men's team enters their game with a 12-8 record and 8-4 mark in conference play. They are currently in second place in the LSC. They boast five players averaging in double figures and another player scoring 9.8 points per game.
Dionelle Rucker (San Antonio/New Life Christian Academy) leads the team with 16.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. The Cardinals lead the LSC in scoring (74.7/game), field goal percentage (49.0) and steals (8.4/game).
The Lions (12-10, 5-7) have lost five of their last seven conference games and are the second highest scoring team in the conference at 74.4 points per game. Preston Whitley leads the team with 14.8 points per game and grabs 5.0 rebounds per game. Andrew Davis is the team's top rebounder with 6.9 per game and is one of six players averaging at least 8.8 points per game. The Cardinals won the first matchup with the Lions in Commerce this year, 86-75 on January 2.
