AUSTIN, TEXAS – On the first day of the University of Texas Invitational, sophomore
Evandro Silva (Guaruja, Brazil/Colegio do Carmo) led the University of the Incarnate Word swim teams with the first NCAA Division I "B" standard mark for the program on Thursday.
Silva finished in sixth place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:47.64 easily eclipsing the "B" standard of 1:49.09. He actually swam faster in the prelims with a time of 1:47.42. Teammates
Daniel Torres (Chihuahua, Mexico/COBACH 3) and
David Moore (San Antonio/Marshall HS) also eclipsed the "B" standard in the same event. Torres finished in 16
th place and swam his fastest time in the prelims with a 1:48.09. Moore, a freshman, finished in 18
th place, but hit the wall in 1:47.69 in the finals.
In the men's 500-yard freestyle, Connor Hennessy (San Antonio/Business Careers HS) took aim at the school record and fell less than two seconds shy with a time of 4:24.77 en route to winning the "C" Final.
The Cardinals did set a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The squad of Silva,
Alex Brouwer (Scottsdale, AZ/Notre Dame Prep), Torres and
Scott Jonsson (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) swam a time of 1:20.44 to shatter the previous school record by 0.41 seconds.
On the women's side, the Cardinals did not have as much success, but still put together some quality performances.
Lana Nguyen (Kiev, Ukraine/NPD) eclipsed her personal record in the 50-yard freestyle three times during the day, twice in the open event and once in the 200-yard freestyle relay. She would finish in 32
nd in the open 50 free with 23.31 her best time of the day.
The meet continues on Friday and Saturday with morning preliminaries and evening finals.
