Cardinals Roll into Christmas Break

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team improved to 10-1 on Tuesday night at the McDermott Center with a 98-53 win over visiting Open Bible College.  The win gives the Cardinals their best start to a season since 2010-11 when they also began 10-1.

The Cardinals got off to a sluggish start and led only 12-8 after eight minutes of action, but quickly put it into high gear on the offensive and defensive ends.  By halftime, they led 45-26 and they did not allow the Bruins any thoughts of an upset.

The second half turned into the Mitchell Badillo (Houston/Cy Falls HS) Show as he assisted on five buckets in the first six minutes and finished with a game high seven assists while also scoring 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field.  Even when the Cardinals cleared the bench they were able to extend the lead getting solid performances from Justin Philippe (Linden, NJ/Linden HS) and John Baker (Adkins/East Central HS).  The team shot 67.6 percent from the field in the second half and scored 38 of their 53 points in the paint.

Guards Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) and Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) once again were the leaders of the team.  Hittle poured in 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and grabbed seven rebounds.  Livingston led the team with 22 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks to round out a great all-around performance.

The Cardinals shot 62.5 percent from the field, made 6-of-16 from three-point range and were 12-of-16 at the foul line.  Philippe had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists while Baker contributed 11 points and seven rebounds.  Winslo Barry (Nassau, Bahamas/Tyler JC) added 10 points.
