Football Hosts ACU in Rematch

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – In a rare football rematch, the University of the Incarnate Word will get a second chance at visiting Abilene Christian University on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Benson Stadium.

The Cardinals (5-4) and Wildcats (5-4) met on October 19 in Abilene with ACU coming out on top 40-6.  UIW turned the ball over five times in that game and believe that cutting down on the turnovers could make a big difference in the rematch.

UIW is coming off an exciting 47-43 come from behind victory at McMurry last week.  A star was born in freshman running back Broderick Reeves (Mexia/Mexia HS) who rushed for a school record 244 yards and six touchdowns.  He is averaging 7.0 yards per carry for the season and headlines a strong rushing attack that is averaging 191.4 yards per game.

Red-shirt freshman quarterback Trent Brittain (Eastland/Eastland HS) directs the UIW offense.  He is completing 54.5 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns against six interceptions on the season.  He has averaged 175.0 yards per game through the air.  Casey Jennings (Fremont, CA/Washington HS) is the top receiver on the team with 39 receptions for 583 yards and three touchdowns.  He needs 45 yards receiving to set the single season mark for the Cardinals.

On defense, the Cardinals are allowing 374.5 yards per game.  Brandon Tanksley (Katy/Morton Ranch HS) leads the team with 46 tackles, but seniors Devin Haywood (San Antonio/Roosevelt HS) and Robby Horton (Beeville/Jones HS) are the two most important players on defense.  Haywood has 44 tackles, five pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and an interception.  Horton, a defensive tackle, is third on the team with 36 tackles and leads the team with 8.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks.

Senior punter Emmanuel Nunez (Dallas/Seguin HS) is having another strong season averaging 42.0 yards per kick with 12 of his 47 punts ending inside the 20-yard line.

The Wildcats boast a potent offense that is averaging 45.0 points and 466.9 yards of total offense per game.  Quarterback John David Baker is having a fantastic season completing 65.7 percent of his passes for 290.2 yards per game.  He has 29 touchdowns against just three interceptions.  His two favorite receivers are Taylor Gabriel (59 rec., 883 yards) and Darian Hogg (41 rec., 613 yards) who have a combined 14 touchdowns.  In the running game, Charcandrick West leads the way with 664 yards on 5.7 yards per carry along with 10 touchdowns.

The ACU defense gives up 374 yards per game.  Angel Lopez leads the team with 80 tackles and two interceptions.  Nick Richardson has added 12.5 tackles for loss and 9.0 sacks.

Abilene Christian has won all four previous matchups between the two teams.
