Cardinals Tie Ladyjacks in Season Finale

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – In the final game of the Tina Patterson era, the University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team tied Southland Conference regular season champion Stephen F. Austin, 1-1 on Sunday afternoon at Benson Stadium.

The Ladyjacks (15-3-2, 10-1-1) entered the game needing to at least tie the Cardinals (10-6-3, 4-5-3) to ensure the SLC regular season title.  UIW gave SFA all they could handle.  In a physical matchup, it was the Cardinals who got on the scoreboard first.  Senior Sydney Solomon (Schertz/Randolph HS) dribbled down the left end line into the 18-yard box and sent a perfect low cross to freshman Heather McKinney (Beeville/Jones HS) who beat the goalkeeper with a shot to the lower right hand corner of the goal at 38:14.

The Cardinals retained their lead well into the second half.  SFA's Dallas Brown nearly tied the game in the 62nd minute when her shot hit the crossbar and bounced straight down before being cleared out of the zone.  The Ladyjacks finally tied the game when Hailey Hunt collected a loose ball just outside the 18-yard box and hit a perfect shot into the top right corner of the goal at 72:01.

In the first overtime period, Zuri Prince nearly gave the visitors the win with a strong header in the 98th minute.  UIW's Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) had to leap to make the stop and the ball nearly crossed the goal line before she was able to corral it.

The Ladyjacks attempted 15 shots while the Cardinals had seven shots.  Kowalik finished with four saves while Lacey Lee made one save for SFA.

Tina Patterson is retiring at the end of the academic year and Sunday was her final match for the Cardinals ending a fantastic 20-yard career.  She finished with 18 winnings season, 16 seasons with double-digit wins and six seasons with at least 15 wins.  Her final record is 246-102-34 and includes 11 conference titles, three regional championships and seven conference coach of the year awards.
