Box Score DENTON, TX – In what was expected to be the toughest game of the season so far, the Cardinals were dealt their first loss against the University of North Texas.
Playing their first Division I rival ever in program history marked a challenging milestone for the Cardinals, who succumbed to the Mean Green 67-84.
A strong defense and a balanced offense from UNT saw them power ahead in the first half of the game and produce a margin that ultimately sealed them the win. They opened the game with an 8-0 run and secured a 27-point lead all before the half time whistle.
Jordan Williams led the way for the Mean Green, posting a season high of 19 points and although this was matched by
Mitchell Badillo (Houston, TX) for the Cardinals, UNT's defense was quick to dismantle UIW's offensive drives.
The second half saw some improvement from the Cardinals who outscored their opponents 51-42.
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels, TX) and
Sam Burmeister (San Antonio, TX) joined Badillo in posting double figures, but UNT's dominate performance in the first half ensured that the Cardinals scored 19 points below their season average.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday after the Thanksgiving break, when they host Texas A&M International at the McDermott Center at 2 p.m.
