Cardinals Open Home Slate

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team has opened the season with three straight road games, but they will play in front of the home crowd for the first time on Tuesday night.  The Cardinals (3-0) host Northwood University at 7 p.m. at the McDermott Center.

The Cardinals and Knights (1-1) met earlier in the season with UIW taking an 88-72 victory in Cedar Hill, TX.  Freshman Sam Burmeister (San Antonio/Churchill HS) led UIW in that game with 22 points on 5-of-9 shooting from three-point range.  The Knights were led by BJ Dale who finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

The Cardinals have four players averaging in double figures and have had five players reach double digits in each game this year.  Sophomore guard Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) has started the season shooting the ball extremely well hitting 52.6 percent of his field goals and 11-of-21 from three-point range.  He leads the team with 19.3 points per game and is pulling down 7.0 rebounds per game.  Senior center Ian Markolf (San Antonio/Churchill HS) has recorded two double-doubles already this season and is averaging 13.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game while shooting 63.0 percent from the floor.

The Cardinals are looking for their first 4-0 start to the season since opening the 2010-11 campaign with 10 consecutive victories.  Live stats and live video will be available through the website at www.uiwcardinals.com.
