Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word football team tried to make it four straight wins on Saturday afternoon, but fell to visiting Angelo State University, 7-0 at Benson Stadium on Senior Day.
An 85-yard pass play from Kyle Washington to Quinn Reels proved to be the difference in the game. Washington's pass went a total of 1-yard as he shuffled it forward to Reels who came in motion on the play. Reels caught the ball, raced around the right end and was gone. The touchdown came with 4:40 remaining in the third quarter.
The Rams (5-6) moved the ball well for most of the game, but the Cardinals (6-5) was able to slow them down every time they mounted a drive. UIW struggled to move the ball on offense gaining just 228 yards in the contest.
Despite the difficulties, the Cardinals had a chance to score late in the game. After stopping the Rams on third-and-inches, they got the ball at their own 39-yard line with 2:22 to play. They quickly moved the ball inside the 20-yard line, but then the Rams defense came up big once again and UIW was unable to convert a fourth down ending their chances.
The Cardinals drove into Angelo State territory on five separate occasions. In the first quarter they moved down to the ASU 28-yard line, but were stopped on fourth down. In the third quarter, they drove down to the ASU 24-yard line and were going to attempt a field goal, but a bobbled snap ended thoughts of three points.
The Rams pushed the ball into UIW territory six times outside of their one touchdown. They were stopped on downs two times and had a 25-yard field goal clang off the right goal post in the fourth quarter.
The Cardinals ran the ball 36 times for 117 yards. Senior
Matt Bass (Alvin/Alvin HS) led the way with 35 yards on four carries. Four other players had between 20 and 29 yards. Quarterback
Trent Brittain (Eastland/Eastland HS) went 17-of-37 for 111 yards and two interceptions.
Casey Jennings (Fremont, CA/Washington HS) had six catches for 43 yards. He set the school record for receptions in the game and finished the year with 54.
On defense,
Padyn Giebler (Ivan/Stephenville HS) led the Cardinals with nine tackles while
Devin Haywood (San Antonio/Roosevelt HS) had eight stops.
Robby Horton (Beeville/Jones HS) added seven tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack.
Nick Ginn (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) had two tackles for loss and a sack while
Kobie Douglas (Plano/Plano HS) picked off his team high third pass of the year.
In special teams,
Emmanuel Nunez (Dallas/Seguin HS) had a strong day punting for UIW. He booted eight kicks for an average of 45.2 yards with four ending inside the 20-yard line and a long of 57 yards.
The Rams accumulated 442 yards of total offense. Washington rushed for 110 yards on 17 carries and was 12-of-26 for 182 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Jermie Calhoun had 83 yards rushing on 19 carries and Blake Smith with 60 yards on nine carries. Reels had two catches for 105 yards.
The Rams defense had three players with eight tackles apiece. Clayton Callicutt had two sacks, including one on the Cardinals' final drive. Rush Seaver and Jarred Ross each had interceptions in the game.
The Cardinals finished the season with their first ever winning record as a program. The 7-0 score was the fewest combined points for a UIW football game by a long shot.
