Box Score KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – One week after being swept by Texas A&M-Kingsville at home, the University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team paid back the Javelinas with a three-set sweep of their own at Hampton Inn Court on Tuesday night.
The Cardinals (7-8) played some of their best volleyball of the season in a 25-23, 25-18, 25-7 win. After a close first set, UIW posted a .367 attack percentage in the second set and a .412 attack percentage in the third set.
In the first set, the Cardinals jumped out to an 18-11 lead before the Javelinas (10-9) mounted a comeback. A&M-Kingsville scored six of the next eight points and eventually tied the set at 23-23. UIW pulled out the set after an attack error by Kingsville and then a block by
Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) and
Jaina Jackson (Huntley, IL/Huntley HS) won the set. After that it was all Cardinals who won the match in 1:09.
The Cardinals had 34 kills, 29 digs, 12.0 blocks and a .244 attack percentage for the match.
Shaina Garza (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) led the team with nine kills and a .412 attack.
Meaghan Patterson (Helotes/O'Connor HS) and Vidaurri led the defense with seven blocks apiece.
Danielle Suarez (San Antonio/Antonian HS) and
Taylor McClelland (Cypress/Cypress Ranch HS) combined for 29 assists.
The Javelinas had 23 kills, 27 digs, 3.0 blocks and .000 attack percentage. Shae Smith led the team with seven kills and Giselle Carreon dished out 12 assists. Kelsey Washington and Brittany Gutierrez each had seven digs in the match.
The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday night at home against Southland Conference rival Sam Houston State at 7 p.m.
