Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – For the first time this year the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team played in front of their home crowd on Tuesday night, but the homecoming was spoiled when Trinity University's Victor Araujo slotted home an 86
th minute goal to give the visitors a 2-1 win at Benson Stadium.
In an evenly played match, it was the Cardinals (4-5) who scored first when
Victor Pinal (Dallas/Skyline HS) won a 50-50 ball, turned and ripped a shot from 30 yards into the top corner of the goal. The score came at the 17:28 mark of the first half and it remained 1-0 through halftime.
In the second half, play picked up a bit with more end to end action. The Tigers (11-2-1) earned six corner kicks in the period and used
the strong throw-ins of Jeff Hayes to keep pressure on the UIW back line. The breakthrough for the Tigers finally came in the 70
th minute with Todd Edwards played a ball from the right wing into the box and Brian Hines was able to bury the shot from eight yards out.
It looked like the game was headed to overtime, when the Tigers struck again. Hines beat his defender end line on the left side and passed off to Araujo who fired a shot from 12 yards out on the left wing and put it past a diving
Jarred Kahan (Houston/Clear Brook HS) at 85:38.
The Cardinals had a couple of chances in the final minutes, but could not find the equalizer. "This was not one of our best performances this year," said UIW head coach
Vince Martinez. "I'm disappointed that we did not play with the energy or passion that we can and it is a hard pill to swallow when you perform that way."
Overall, the Cardinals attempted 14 shots to the Tigers 12, but Trinity earned 10 corner kicks to only one for UIW. Kahan made five saves for the Cardinals and his counterpart, Matt Cardone, also made five saves.
The Cardinals are back in action next Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Oral Roberts University.
