MSU Moves Past Cardinals

Box Score WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – A matchup of the top two men's basketball teams in the Lone Star Conference ended with Midwestern State coming out on top of visiting University of the Incarnate Word on Thursday night, 67-54 at the D.L. Ligon Coliseum.  (Box Score)

The Cardinals (12-7, 8-3) held the early lead, but the Mustangs (13-5, 9-2) claimed the lead by halftime and then they continued to pull away in the second half before settling in for a double digit victory.  The gave the Mustangs sole possession of first place in the conference.

The Mustangs dominated the glass grabbing 19 offensive rebounds while the Cardinals only had four.  MSU outscored UIW, 19-4 on second chance points.  Thomas Corbin led all players with six offensive rebounds and added 13 points for the Mustangs.

The Cardinals struggled in the first half shooting only 36.4 percent from the field before knocking down 55 percent of their shots in the second half.  Overall, the team went 19-of-42 from the field, but only made 1-of-8 from three-point range.  To make matters worse, the Cardinals connected on just 15-of-30 from the foul line.  Dionelle Rucker (San Antonio/New Life Christian Academy) led the team with 13 points and four steals.  Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) added 11 points and four steals.  Anthony Horton (League City/Clear Springs HS) added eight points and a team high seven rebounds.

The Mustangs had three players score in double figures and shot 43.3 percent from the field.  They went 4-of-14 from three-point range and were 11-of-18 at the charity stripe.  Kevin Grayer led the team with 15 points while dishing out six assists.  Cam Adderley added 11 points.  Corbin posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards while Derrell Gibbs pulled down 11 rebounds.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at Cameron at 4 p.m.
