SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – For the second time this week the University of the Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Kingsville will meet in a Lone Star Conference basketball doubleheader as part of the conference's Rivalry Week. The Cardinals host the Javelinas on Saturday with the women's game starting at 2 p.m. and the men's game will follow at 4 p.m.
The UIW women shut down the Javelinas offense on Wednesday when they won 57-33 and limited them to 21.2 percent shooting from the field. The Cardinals enter the game with an 11-5 record and a 7-3 mark in conference play putting them one game out of first place.
The Cardinals have won four of their last five games, all in conference play.
Ashlyn Green (Irving/Irving HS) leads the team with 11.4 points per game and she leads the LSC with 3.6 steals per game. The team is holding opponents to 57.7 percent shooting from the field and they are 9-0 when holding the opposition under 60 points.
The Javelinas (3-13, 1-9) have been struggling in recent weeks and are on a 12-game losing streak. Kaitlyn Lowen leads the team with 9.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. They are giving up 69.4 points per game and allowing opponents to shoot 44.1 percent from the field.
On the men's side, the Cardinals and Hoggies played a hard fought contest that was not decided until the final moments on Wednesday. The Cardinals have been one of the hottest teams in the conference winning seven of their last eight games. They are 11-6 overall and tied for first in the LSC with a 7-2 mark.
The Cardinals boast six players averaging in double figures and lead the league with 76.7 points per game.
Dionelle Rucker (San Antonio/New Life Christian Academy) averages an LSC best 17.6 points per game and grabs 6.2 rebounds per game.
Andre Corley (Baytown/Baytown HS) has been firing in 14.1 points per game while
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) is averaging 12.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 1.3 blocks per game.
The Javelinas enter Saturday's game with a 9-7 record and 5-4 mark in the conference. Rashad Basey leads the team with 14.9 point and nearly four assists per game. Adonis Bailey led the Hogs with 22 points on Wednesday on 9-of-9 shooting from the field. The team is holding opponents to 61.9 points per game and only 38.4 percent shooting from the field.
