After Monday's first round of the Firestone Lone Star Conference Women's Golf Championship, the University of the Incarnate Word had two players sitting in the top ten of the field, while the team was sitting back in 7th place.
Sophomore Flower Castillo shot a 72 (even) and was alone in 2nd place, as an individual, after her first go at Trophy Club Country Club's course. Also representing Incarnate Word in the top ten was junior Joana De Sa Pereira, whose 75 (+3) had put her in a tie for 8th place.
Castillo's spot in second was followed by three players in third place. Midwestern State's Kendra Whitley was at 1-under (71) and in first place.
Tarleton State was in first place, as a team, at 11-over (299) with Midwestern State not far behind with a 302. UIW's 320 (32-over) had them alone in 7th place.
Samantha Martinez shot an 82 for a share of 23rd, while Emily Carrubba and Michele Tracker shot matching 91s and are tied in 37th going into tomorrow's final round.
If Castillo is able to maintain her place after tomorrow's final round, she will earn an invitation to the NCAA Division II regional tournament as an individual. De Sa Pereira was the last women's golfer from Incarnate Word to compete in the regional championships.
