UIW SPLITS DOUBLE HEADER IN AUSTIN

Third baseman Monica Acuna had two RBIs in the Cardinal's 3-2 win over St. Edward's in the first game.

After being post-poned for a day due to rain, the Cardinals took on St. Edwards in a double header on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals beat the Hilltoppers 3-2 before falling to them in the second game without scoring a single run, 0-5.

Cardinal short stop Ashley Freeman started the first game with a hit by St. Edward's pitcher Paige Sandhal and then advanced to second base shortly there after because of a wild pitch. Center fielder Mallory Henry was walked and, with players on first and second base, UIW third baseman Monica Acuna hit a huge single, earning two RBIs. Those would be the only two runs the Cardinals would score until the fifth inning.

Junior right hander Briana Sanchez, now 4-1, gave up just eight hits and two runs, keeping UIW in the lead for a close win. St. Edward's earned runs in both the first and seventh innings. Sandhal (1-3) gave up nine hits and three runs in the Hilltoppers loss.

Game two of the double header doesn't have as happy of an ending for the Cardinals. With an error and just three hits compared to the Hilltoppers' eight, the Cardinals couldn't seem to make their way onto the scoreboard.

Cardinal pitcher Whitney Waltrip (3-2) allowed eight hits and three runs and freshman St. Edward's pitcher Sarah DeBrow (2-1) pitched all seven innings and just let the Cardinals connect three times.

Two of those hits belonged to Freeman and the other was a single up the middle by Acuna. Both players had a great first game at bat as well.

With a win and a loss, the Cardinals are now 7-3 and have over a week off before they take Trinity University on in a double header at home on Feb. 28. First pitch is set to be thrown at 4 p.m.
