SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word basketball teams open the Lone Star Conference schedule on Thursday at the McDermott Center with a doubleheader against Midwestern State. The women's game begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the men's game at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The Cardinals (3-2) will have their hands full in the women's game as the Mustangs enter the game with a perfect 4-0 record. UIW has three players averaging at least 10 points per game in
Lauren McKinney (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS), Ify Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) and
Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS). The team is giving up just 60.0 points per game and is forcing 22.8 turnovers per game.
The Mustangs are scoring over 73 points per game and they are led by the duo of Kirsti Degelia and Andrea Carter. Degelia is scoring 16.5 points and dishing out 4.3 assists per game. Carter is averaging a double-double with 15.0 points and 12.8 rebounds per game while leading the team with 4.3 steals.
In the men's game, the Cardinals (3-2) hope to extend the Mustangs' (3-2) losing streak to three games. Midwestern State has been the conference power the last few years and they are outscoring their opponents by 10 points per game and averaging 11 more rebounds per game than their opponents. They have four players averaging in double figures including Keith Spellman who pumps in 15.8 points per game.
The Cardinals are averaging 77.0 points per game and shooting nearly 48 percent from the field.
Dionelle Rucker (San Antonio/New Life Christian Academy) leads the team and the conference with 22.6 points per game.
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) chips in with 13.0 points per game while
Anthony Horton (League City/Clear Springs HS) adds 11.6 points per game.
A food drive benefitting the San Antonio Food Bank will take place on game day. Any fan who brings two canned goods will receive free admission to both games.
