The Lone Star Conference held its 2011 Media Day in Fort Worth on Tuesday, announcing preseason teams and player awards for four fall sports including men's and women's soccer.
For the University of the Incarnate Word, the men's program was selected 2nd and the women's team was chosen 4th by the voters.
The men's second place finish puts them behind long-time nemesis Midwestern State, which earned 39 points overall and nine first-place votes, and in a tie with West Texas A&M – with both UIW and WT getting 25 points.
In addition to the team's second-place spot on the preseason poll, it was announced that senior Callum Riley had been named the Preseason Co-Offensive Player of the Year with MSU's David Freeland.
Riley, who hails from Leicester, England, topped the LSC with a 17 goals and 38 points in 2010. He had five game-winners and was a perfect 3-for-3 in penalty kick opportunities to earn first-team Daktronics All-South Central Region, honorable mention Daktronics All-American, first-team all-LSC and LSC Offensive Player of the Year acclaim.
Over on the women's side, Incarnate Word's 4th place spot on the polls reflects the team's finish at the end of the 2010 season. 102 points were given to the Cardinals, just five back of Angelo State in third place. Abilene Christian was voted 2nd and Midwestern State took 1st.
The Cardinal men will open the season on the road in a neutral-site game against Colorado School of Mines (played at West Texas) on Sunday, September 4th. The women start the 2011 season at home against Washburn (Kansas) on September 2nd at 7 p.m.
The first Lone Star Conference game of the season for the men happens at home vs. Midwestern State on Friday, September 16th at 7 p.m. The women open LSC play on the road against Abilene Christian at 5:00 p.m.
