Incarnate Word freshman Elodie Barre' capped off her track and field season by jumping her way into All-American recognition by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Barre' went 5.87 meters (19'-26”) in the long jump to finish seventh at the NCAA Division II National Championships. To gain All-American status athletes must earn points at the national meet.
That effort was the second best in UIW history. Earlier this spring at the Lone Star Conference championships Barre' won the long jump with a school record 6.15 meters (20'-18”).
The long jump was but one of four events for Barre' at the NCAA event. She ran a 24.31 in the 200-meters but did not make the finals. Her time actually was eighth best in the field but because heat winners get an automatic berth in the finals Barre' lost out to a slower time.
In the 100-meters she turned in an 11.84 which was 13th in the preliminaries. She then anchored the Cardinals 4x100 relay team to a time of 46.84 which was 10th and just out of the finals. Joining Barre' on the relay team were Elvira Gonzalez, Shaneve Swift and Vanecia Spencer. All four runners are freshmen.
All four of the efforts by Barre' were best among Lone Star competitors at the national meet.
Earlier she was named USTFCCCA All-South Central Region in three events. And that came after she won three individual events and anchored two winning UIW relay teams at the Lone Star championships. For her efforts there she captured both major women's awards, the Wes Kittley Award as the outstanding female track athlete and the David Noble Award as the outstanding female field performer.
