The UIW baseball team's twelve-game winning streak came to a halt Tuesday night as cross-town rival St. Mary's University beat the Cardinals, 5-1, at STMU.
Incarnate Word (31-13 overall) only managed four hits while the Rattlers connected on eight hits. UIW's lone run came in the sixth inning after John Zule singled and then scored following a Steven Vidaurri double and an RBI-ground out by Matt Roohan.
The Cardinals return to Sullivan Field this weekend for a Friday-Saturday series against Lone Star Conference foe Southeastern Oklahoma.
This series not only wraps up the 2011 regular season, but it pits the two teams tied for first place head-to-head with the regular-season crown on the line AND the top seed in the upcoming Lone Star Conference Championship at Abilene Christian next week.
The six-team tournament already has five teams with locked-in and the sixth spot will be decided after this weekend's games. Right now, the Cardinals are tied with Southeastern with a 22-8 conference record.
Friday's doubleheader at Sullivan Field is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. and Saturday's lone 9-inning matchup is also slated to begin at 1 p.m.
