FLOWERS GETS CLUTCH HIT LATE FOR 3-1 WIN

UIW center fielder Ryan Flowers hit a two-out, two-RBI double in the bottom of the 8th to give Incarnate Word a 3-1 lead and the eventual victory over TAMU-Kingsville on Friday night.

The University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals survived a pitcher's duel against Texas A&M University-Kingsville on Friday night at Sullivan Field, getting a 3-1 victory thanks to a game-winning RBI double by Ryan Flowers in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Flowers, who hit 2-for-4 in the contest, had teammates on second and third (in Mike De La Rosa and Matt Roohan, respectively) and had two outs on the scoreboard in the 1-1 game. The batter before, Jackson Woodruff, had laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners into scoring position – which was huge because De La Rosa, the at-bat before, had also laid down a bunt to advance Roohan, but reached first on a fielding error by the pitcher. Thus, Woodruff's out was only the second out of the inning for UIW and Flowers was up to the plate.

Flowers cracked a pitch high and far into left-center field and Roohan and De La Rosa tore around the bases for the 3-1 lead as Flowers ran into second base standing up.

That lead allowed UIW (25-12 overall, 18-8 in the Lone Star Conference) to take out starting pitcher Kirk Jewasko and put in closer Elroy Urbina to go for the save.

Jewasko had pitched eight complete innings and struck out nine batters while only allowing one run to improve his overall record to 9-1 on the season. Urbina, meanwhile, struck out the first two batters he faced and then got the third batter to ground out to first base for the 1-2-3 half-inning.

The save was the 10th of the season for Urbina, who ties Alfredo Caballero for the most in a season (set last year by Caballero) and also ties Urbina with Caballero for second-most in a career at UIW.

Tomorrow, UIW will hope to get more runs and hits against TAMU-Kingsville in a doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m.
