CARDINALS SPLIT NON-LEAGUE PAIR

Sarah Holub got her first round-tripper of the season in game two.
Incarnate Word Tuesday stepped away from Lone Star Conference play and the Cardinals halved a pair with Texas A&M International.

The split put UIW at 24-18 for the year while the Dustdevils are now 23-24.

Briana Sanchez, the current Lone Star South Division co-pitcher of the week, took up where she left off last weekend and went the distance in game one for her 16th win of the year against eight losses. In her seven innings of work she allowed but three hits, all singles, with the one unearned run. Last weekend in a three-game sweep of Tarleton State she worked two complete-game victories and got the save in the third.

Against TAMUI she walked a pair and fanned 10, the 10th time this year she has reached double digits in K's. She is 8-2 in those and one of the losses was that 13-inning complete game back in mid-February.

Her run support came with twosomes in the first, second and third innings. The Cardinals got a pair in the first on two errors by the Dustdevils before two hits, a fielder's choice and a wild pitch pushed another two across in the second.

In the third Monica Acuna singled home one before the game's final run came across on an infield ground out. Of the six UIW runs Acuna drove home three. Both Shelby Waltrip and Chelsea Muskopf went 2-3 with an RBI each.

TAMUI got out first in game two with a single run in the top of the second inning on an outfield error to open the frame followed by a fielder's choice out and a single to center field by Rochelle Nash.

The Dustdevils upped the margin to 3-0 with a pair in the fifth before Incarnate Word made a game of it with two runs in the bottom of that inning. Sarah Holub homered to left center with one out to get the Cardinals on the board. Sarah O'Brien followed with a single up the middle and came home on a Lea Padilla single to left.

That would be it for the Cardinals as they went one-two-three in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Next up for Incarnate Word is a Friday-Saturday, three-game series against Texas Woman's. These conference games are a single at 6 p.m. Friday and a double at noon on Saturday, all at Cardinals Field on the UIW campus.
