INCARNATE WORD 2-5, TEXAS-PERMIAN BASIN 6-1
Freshman outfielder Whitney Waltrip whacked her team leading sixth home run of the year in the first inning of game two and Briana Sanchez did the rest as Incarnate Word came back to gain a non-conference, softball doubleheader split with Texas-Permian Basin Tuesday afternoon.
After Sanchez gave the Falcons (11-17) three up and three down in the top of the first, UIW (15-9) saw Mallory Henry single, Lea Padilla single before an out was recorded in the bottom of the frame. That's when Waltrip gave Sanchez all the support she would need the rest of the way by sending the ball over the left field wall for three runs. Then Chelsea Muskopf reached on an error before Kim Hanson tripled to right center for the fourth tally of the frame.
From there on it was all Sanchez. She shut down the Falcons for six innings before consecutive doubles in the seventh plated one run and halted Sanchez' consecutive scoreless frames at 23. In going the distance she allowed the one earned run on four hits while walking none and striking out 10.
In game one the Falcons brought out the heavy wood to pound out 13 hits including two doubles and a two-run shot over the left wall from Kristy Leal. UTPB got up 3-0 after three turns in the batter's box before the Cardinals could dent the scoreboard.
In the bottom of the third UIW tallied twice after Sarah O'Brien led off with a single followed by a double off the stick of Melanie Padilla. Waltrip then singled to right sending home both runners to make it 3-2.
Permian Basin two innings later put the game on ice with a trio of tallies on five hits including the Leal blast.
Waltrip worked the first four and two-thirds frames to absorb her seventh loss of the year against three wins. She gave up six earned runs on 12 hits while walking one and striking out six.
Offensively O'Brien was the only Cardinals batter to have two hits, both singles, and Padilla was the only one with more than one base with her double.
