INCARNATE WORD 4-5, ST. EDWARD'S 2-6
Two former Heartland Conference rivals got together Wednesday, again, and Incarnate Word and St. Edward's did what they have done all season long, split.
The Cardinals (12-7) behind the bat of Sarah O'Brien and the pitching of Briana Sanchez won the first game 5-2 before St. Edward's (12-13) eeked across a seventh inning run for a 6-5 decision in the nightcap. These two former conference opponents now have met six times this season and the count is even at 3-3.
In game one O'Brien went 2-3 at the plate with a run-scoring double in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth. She also scored a run in the fourth after an Alyssa Gonzales single.
Sanchez took advantage of the run support by working a complete game allowing the two earned runs on five hits. She walked five and struck out four. Her season mark is now 8-1. She is the current Lone Star Conference pitcher of the week for the South Division.
In game two St. Edward's got out early by 4-0 after three innings before UIW began to eat into the lead. In the fourth, with two out, Monica Acuna hit one out of the park for two RBI. After SEU got one more in the fifth to go up 4-2, the Cardinals rallied in the bottom of that frame when Lea Padilla singled home two. That made it 5-4.
Incarnate Word tied it in the sixth when Whitney Waltrip homered to center field. But then came the heartbreaker in the top of the seventh.
A single, a hit batsman, an infield out and a sacrifice bunt brought home the winner.
Waltrip went the distance and absorbed the loss. At 3-6 for the year, she allowed just three of six runs to be earned as the Cardinals made four errors behind her. She gave up four hits, walked three and fanned four.
