The Cardinal women suffered a tough loss on the road against Midwestern State on Saturday night, falling 71-60 to the Mustangs in a game that was settled in two places – the paint and the free throw line.
UIW was out-rebounded 41 to 26, but when the Cardinals – a 67.5% free throw shooting team – only had six free throw attempts in the entire game (shooting 3-for-6) and the host team had 24 free throws (making 17 of those), the Cardinals had little chance to even the odds.
Two Incarnate Word players fouled out – center Rose Whitehead and guard Katy Cooke – and both of those players were double-digit scorers for UIW, with both players scoring 10 points for the Cardinals.
Two players for Midwestern State had a team-high 3 fouls.
Leading Incarnate Word in scoring was freshman Ifunanya Mora with 21 points (grabbing 6 rebounds). Taylor Murray also was in double-digits in the points column with an 11-point outing (adding 7 rebounds).
Both teams had four players score in double figures.
UIW has lost two straight and will be back on the road this Tuesday night for a matchup against Abilene Christian University, which downed the Cardinals, 74-58, on January 26th.
