In their first game since the start of the winter holiday, the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team ended a three-game losing skid with a 65-52 victory over the University of Arkansas-Monticello on Friday afternoon at Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary's University.
The Cardinals (now 7-4 overall) had three players score in double figures and led by as many as 20 points in the contest. UAM's biggest lead was four points and it came in the beginning of the first half. UIW took the lead, 17-16, with 7:59 to go in the first half and never looked back.
The win keeps UIW undefeated in non-conference games so far this season at 5-0.
Jocelyn Jarmon led the Cardinals in scoring with 16 points to go with her 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Senior post Chloe Wallace also had a good game with 15 points and 8 rebounds (she had a blocked shot and a steal) while Ifunanya Mora added 13 points and 2 assists.
Ashleyn Green scored 9 points and grabbed 6 rebounds (all defensive) while also blocking a shot and getting 3 steals for UIW off the bench.
The Cardinals out-rebounded Arkansas-Monticello, 39-to-29, generated 12 points to UAM's 6 off of fast-break points, and battled for 14 offensive rebounds to get 16 second-chance points.
Incarnate Word will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Saturday for another game in the 2011 St. Mary's Classic at Bill Greehey Arena. The Cardinals will face off against former Lone Star Conference member University of Central Oklahoma.
