After the team's first loss on Thursday night, the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team had to regroup and prepare for Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday.
The Cardinals prepared by focusing on fixing up the rebound problems they'd had against West Texas – which would turn out to be crucial against the Zias as UIW earned 17 more boards than the visitors en route to a 61-41 victory at the McDermott Center.
“We addressed offensive rebounds and play in the paint,” coach Angela Lawson said.
Prepping for better production in the paint was especially crucial for Saturday's matchup because Eastern NM was coming off a victory against Texas A&M-Kingsville in which Previous Herrin, the team's center, scored an impressive 40 points.
Against the Cardinals, she scored 10 points (the only ENMU player in double figures), grabbed 9 rebounds and fouled out of the game.
For Incarnate Word, senior Chloe Wallace battled for a game-high 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for a double-double. Also scoring in double-digits for UIW were Jocelyn Jarmon (14 points and 8 rebounds) and Katy Cooke (12 points).
Jarmon also had six assists, while Ifunanya Mora and Ashlyn Green each contributed 7 rebounds for Incarnate Word. All in all, UIW had 49 rebounds to ENMU's 32.
The Cardinals will be host to Texas A&M Commerce this Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m.
