In their first home game of the 2011-2012, the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team played host to Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday and sent UTPB on their way with a 60-45 UIW victory.
The visiting Falcons had a 3-1 record, defeating Lone Star Teams Angelo State and Texas A&M-Kingsville along the way, while the Cardinals were 2-0 with wins over Texas A&M International and St. Edward's University. UIW is now 3-0 and Permian Basin is 3-2.
Incarnate Word had four players score in double-digits for the third game (meaning UIW has had a quartet of players getting double figures in every game of the year thus far) and pressured Permian Basin into 27 turnovers.
“I always tell our team that whenever things might not being going well for you on the offensive side of the floor, if shots just aren't falling, you can always dictate things on the defensive side of the floor with energy and effort,” coach Angela Lawson said. “Our team battled through some adversity and got the win, so that's what is important.”
Ashlyn Green led UIW in scoring with a 13-point effort along with her 3 rebounds, 2 assists, a blocked shot and a steal. Ifunanya Mora scored 12 points and had 5 rebounds; Chloe Wallace scored 11 points and battled for 9 rebounds and grabbed 4 steals; and Katy Cooke scored 10 points and had 3 rebounds and two assists with her 5 steals.
Jocelyn Jarmon scored 7 points and had five assists.
On the other side of the floor, the Cardinals limited just one player from UTPB to double digits scoring (for the second straight games) and led by as many as 22 points at the 11:01-mark in the second half.
Incarnate Word is back in action on Tuesday evening with a 5:30 p.m. matchup against longtime, cross-town rival St. Mary's University at the McDermott Center. It's the last game for UIW before Lone Star Conference play begins on December 1st when West Texas comes to San Antonio.
