INCARNATE WORD 74, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS-PERMIAN BASIN 68
After losing the first game of the Heartland/Lone Star Crossover Challenge Tournament in Laredo to Texas A&M International, UIW was ready for a win. The Cardinals put up big numbers and got exactly what they were looking for against the Falcons, returning home 1-1.
Freshman guard Darrell Southworth was one free throw short of an almost perfect game. In just 20 minutes, the newcomer was 6-6 in the paint, 5-5 from behind the arc and 2-3 from the line. He ended the game leading the Cardinals with 19 points and also managed 1 rebound. Southworth wasn't the only Cardinal with big numbers. Four Cardinals ended the game in double digit point figures.
Senior forward Chris Johnson had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds while junior Dionelle Rucker was just 2 rebounds short of a double-double himself with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Johnson led the team in assists with 6. Freshman guard Denzel Livingston was the last Cardinal in double digit point figures with 10.
UIW simply beat UTPB in the shooting battle. With a 64.6 shooting percentage in the paint and a 77.8 percentage from behind the arc, the Falcons just couldn't keep up. UTPB shot 46.3 percent from inside the arc and 52.2 percent from behind it.
UTPB, coming off a win against Texas A&M-Kingsville, did play a hard game and had four players with double digit point figures themselves. The Falcons also beat UIW in the turnover category. They had 12 turnovers throughout the game compared to the Cardinal's 16. Defensively, UTPB had 6 steals, 2 more than UIW who only had 4.
The Cardinals next game will be a non-conference road game in Austin against Huston-Tillotson on Nov. 14. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
