University of Texas of the Permian Basin defeated Incarnate Word, 8-4, Friday evening in the first round of the Heartland Conference Baseball Tournament at Disch-Falk Field in Austin, TX.
The Cardinals, the number two seed in the tournament, fell behind 4-0 before closing the gap to 4-2 in the eighth inning and then getting out-scored, 4-2, in the ninth.
Kirk Jewasko suffered his second loss of the season, surrendering seven earned runs on 10 hits and striking out eight Falcons. Of the Cardinals' five hits on the night, two came from Reno Malay.
The loss puts UIW in the loser's bracket and in a do-or-die matchup against No. 1 seeded St. Mary's University, which was upset by fourth-seeded St. Edward's University, 10-3, in the tournament opener.
Incarnate Word and STMU will start things off at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The winner moves on to a 7 p.m. game against the loser of the UTPB-SEU game at 3 p.m.
