It took senior Nia Torru nearly halfway through the first half, but finally, at the 11:55-mark on the game clock, Torru sunk a 3-pointer to become the all-time leading scorer in Incarnate Word women's basketball history.
Torru finished the game with 16 points and now sits atop the list of some incredibly talented athletes, knocking former record-holder Amy Mueller (who played from 2001-05 and previously led with 1,639) with a new high of 1,652 with the rest of the season remaining to add to that total.
“It's exciting,” Torru said after the game,” I never thought this would happen. I think it's a great accomplishment and I've worked hard to get it (the record).”
The Cardinals (16-6 overall, 10-1 in the Heartland Conference) ended the game atop the visiting Falcons from University of Texas of the Permian Basin with a score of 87-78, having led by as much as 23 points in the second half.
Five players from UIW scored double-figures, led by Hayley Harvey's 21 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Jasmine Smith scored 18 points (hitting 10-of-11 at the free throw line); Cinnamon Kava scored 16 (6-for-6 at the charity stripe) and Nikki Brown scored 12.
The victory keeps Incarnate Word atop the Heartland Conference. UIW has already clinched a berth into the Conference Tournament, but is now battling to lock up one of the top two spots in the field of six to earn a first-round bye.
And while becoming the new leader in scoring was and is special for Torru, she is quick to admit that her focus is on winning the conference.
“We still want to be first in conference,” the Houston native said. “While that was a great personal accomplishment, it was better that we got the win tonight and stayed in first place, building on our great season.”
