In the finale of the 2009-10 regular season for the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team lost a 67-66 heartbreaker to Midwestern State University.
The Cardinals 19-8 overall and 13-1 in the Heartland Conference, lost their second, non-conference game in a row after winning the Heartland Conference regular season title last Saturday against St. Mary's University.
Midwestern State led by six points, 66-60, with 3:28 left to play before Incarnate Word scored six unanswered points to knot the score up at 0:56 on a three-pointer by senior Nia Torru. MSU then killed 26 second of time on their next possession, getting an offensive rebound at the 0:39-mark and re-setting. It was then that the Mustangs drove to the basket and drew a foul against the Cardinals with 30 seconds to play.
Shooting two, Midwestern State only made one of their free throws and UIW had the last possession of the game, getting off two shots in the final seconds – but neither fell and the Cardinals lost, 67-66.
Torru scored a team-high 15 points and Jasmine Smith added 13 points as the only Cardinals in double figures, while Katherine Frost scored 9 points. MSU also had two players score in double digits.
Incarnate Word celebrated Senior Day before the game, taking time to recognize the accomplishments of Torru, Smith, Cinnamon Kava, Hayley Harvey, Nikki Brown and LaShae Woodard, the team's six seniors.
The Cardinals will have to regroup before this weekend as they are the No. 1 seed in the Heartland Conference Women's Basketball Tournament, being played at Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary's University. UIW won the tournament last year and advanced to their first-ever NCAA Division II Regional Tournament.
