Incarnate Word's foursomes dominated the Tiger Relays with wins in every relay event contested at Friday's meet in San Antonio, including a unique race new to the Cardinals.
Host Trinity included a 4x100 relay for weightmen and UIW said no problem, let's win this one also. Freshman Taylor Schroll led off before passing the baton to a pair of senior brothers, David and Mark Olivares. When freshman anchor Danny Gonzales crossed the finish line the Cardinals had won in a school record 46.34.
UIW's other relay wins came in the 4x11 at 42.91 and the 4x400 in 3:18.90. The final relay victory was in an event not new to the track world but fresh to the Cardinals. The foursome of junior Shayn Weidner, sophomore Michael Cortez, and freshmen Chris Flores and Solomon Rotich won the 4x800 in a school time of 8:07.44.
The Olivares brothers later in the day finished second in their respective events. Mark was runnerup in the discus at 45.68 meters while David was second in the javelin with a heave of 54.62 meters.
Freshman Stan Smith got the other Incarnate Word gold medal with his 1.77 leap in the high jump, into a strong wind.
