STILLWATER, OK – The University of the Incarnate Word men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Cowboy Jambo on Friday morning at the Greiner Family Oklahoma State Cross Country Course . The men's team finished in ninth, while the women finished in eleventh. All results can be found here.
Eric Pineda led the way for the Cardinals, finishing in 50th with a 25:10 time. James Butler finished just behind Pineda finishing in 53rd with a 25:25 time.
"This group has been a good pack running machine for some time now, so we take it for granted," said head coach Derek Riedel. "But, to have a 25 second 1-7 gap in a field like this and on a monster, course no less is something we are very pleased with. We will continue to focus on it and as we have 3 weeks of good training, we feel good about the opportunity we have coming up at A&M."
Freshman Stoya Laydevant (22:35) led the way for the women's side for the Red and Black as she finished 77th. Oceane Cercueil finished right behind Laydevant in 84th place with a 22:40 time.
"Stoya did an outstanding job leading the women once again," said Riedel. "I excited to see that most of the women hit the 5k split at or faster than their UIW Invitational 5k time. To do that on a VERY challenging and demanding course is a reason to feel very optimistic about strong performances moving forward. The women committed themselves from the very beginning and didn't get intimidated by the hills."
The Cardinals will return on October 17th at the Arturo Barrios Invitational. The meet will take place in College Station, Texas.
