SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team celebrated senior day on Saturday with a 79-76 double overtime victory over the University of New Orleans. Today marks the seventh-straight victory for the Cardinals, the longest win streak in DI history.
Nina De Leon Negron closed out her final game at the McDermott Center with a career-high 28 points to go along with eight rebounds, four steals and three assists. Seniors
Destiny Terrell and
Chloe Storer scored 13 points each in the win. As a team, the Cardinals pulled down 21 offensive rebounds for 18 second-chance points.
In the high-energy contest, UIW jumped out to a 10-3 start over the Privateers to end the first with an 18-13 advantage. In the second, the Cardinals held New Orleans to just nine points, claiming the largest lead of the game heading into halftime, 33-22.
UNO came out of the locker room on a 12-2 run and tied the game at 34-34 midway through the third quarter. A layup from Storer held off the Privateers but they soon answered, tying the game up again, at 36-36. Another Storer layup followed by buckets from De Leon Negron and
Raimi McCrary helped the Cardinals separate themselves from UNO with a six-point lead (42-36).
The Cardinals were outscored 13-9 in the fourth quarter as the Privateers crept up on UIW's lead. With 1:19 on the clock, New Orleans missed three chances to push the edge until De Leon Negron came up with the steal and
Aliyah Collins was fouled on the way up, making both free throws (53-50). Once again, UNO tied the game with 19 seconds to go, sending the game into the first overtime.
UIW fouled the Privateer center as the shot went through the net and she headed to the line for the 3-point play that tied the game at 59. UNO later knocked down a deep 3-pointer with 24 seconds left to take the 62-59 lead. The Cardinals came back with a critical trey from De Leon Negron to tie the game at 64-64 and trigger double OT.
New Orleans struck first with back-to-back buckets and a four-point lead (68-64). Once again, the Cardinals found themselves in a game that came down to free throws, draining five down the stretch to seal the 79-76 victory.
