CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of Texas A&M – Corpus Christi snapped the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team's seven-game win streak, defeating the Cardinals 65-43 in the regular season finale on Wednesday night.
The Cardinals set the tone in the first quarter, holding the lead until the final few minutes as the Islanders caught up to take a 14-12 advantage to end the first.
Hanna Wheeler tied the game up at 14 to start the second, but UIW's offense stalled finishing with seven total points in the quarter. TAMUCC took the chance to capitalize off the Cardinal scoring drought with a 7-0 run to take a 31-19 lead at halftime.
The Cardinals found their rhythm in the third, but the 15-point quarter wasn't enough to make up the deficit as the Islanders outscored UIW by three to maintain a 49-34 edge heading into the final ten minutes.
The fourth quarter was similar to the second with TAMUCC outscoring the Cardinals 16-9 to take the game, 65-43.
UIW has secured a spot in the 2024 Southland Conference Basketball Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will head into postseason play next week.
