SAN ANTONIO – The entire gym was on the edge of their seats for the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team's 53-51 victory over the Southeastern Louisiana Lions on Thursday night.
The Cardinals, down seven with just a minute to go in the game, forced SLU to the free-throw line. The Lions missed four critical shots from the line, while UIW knocked down eight, creeping up on the SLU lead.
UIW held the momentum from the tip, taking a commanding 7-0 lead to start the game. SLU's first bucket of the game came with just under four minutes to go in the first quarter, which helped UIW to a 12-6 first-quarter edge.
SLU drained a 3-pointer to tie the game 20-20 with two minutes left in the half and an offensive foul on the Cardinals gave the ball back to SLU for the Lions' first lead of the game to end the half 22-20.
The Cardinals found themselves down seven to start the final ten minutes but turned things around when it mattered most. A driving layup from
Aliyah Collins put UIW within one point (51-50) with 22 seconds to go. Collins immediately turned around and grabbed the steal off SLU's baseline pass and
Nina De Leon Negron drew the foul to head to the free-throw line. After she knocked down both to reclaim the Cardinal lead, SLU was unable to come up with a bucket and Collins headed to the free-throw line one last time to solidify the 53-51 victory.
