LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell 78-48 to Texas Tech University in the season opener Monday night.

The Cardinals and Lady Raiders combined for 64 free throws on the night, with UIW scoring more than half its total points from the line.

The Lady Raiders got off to a 5-0 lead, however, the Cardinals hunkered down in a zone defense that led to a three-minute scoring drought for Texas Tech as UIW capitalized off TTU fouls. The Cardinals scored seven of their nine first quarter points from the free throw line to end the first, 19-9.

Texas Tech found its offensive rhythm starting off the second quarter with a 9-0 run that led to a 26-point quarter for the Lady Raiders. Jorja Elliott carried the Cardinals, scoring six of UIW's eight second quarter points. The undersized Cardinals continued to fight to get to the free throw line, scoring 10 of the 17 points from the line to head into the locker room down, 45-17.

The third quarter saw a more aggressive Cardinal team as Shiho Isono scored the first points of the second half, attacking the basket hard on the left side to get the scoring started for UIW. The Cardinals and Lady Raiders kept the third close with Tech narrowly outscoring UIW 16-14 while extending the lead to 61-31.

Both teams got a sneak peek of their bench in the fourth quarter as the Lady Raiders took home the 78-48 season opener victory.
