WACO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team faced the No. 12 Baylor Bears for the second game of the season and the second Big 12 match up for the Cardinals as they fell to the Bears 85-33 on Thursday night in Waco.
The defensive minded Cardinals came out the gates in a 2-3 zone to disrupt the Bears and limit paint touches against the taller Baylor team. On the offensive side of the ball, UIW started the game in style as
Raimi McCrary's defender helped too long on a screen, leaving her wide open to drain a three from the wing on the opening possession. Point guard,
Madison Cockrell didn't hold back, attacking the Bears hard at the rim on the next two scores before
Dorian Norris knocked down her first three of the night to end the first down, 17-10.
Cockrell stayed aggressive ending the first half with seven points to lead the Cardinals, while freshman
Brynn Lusby made her presence known in the second quarter, knocking down two jumpers as the half ended with Baylor up, 38-19.
The Cardinals found themselves on a 7-2 run midway through the third quarter as UIW worked to chip away at the lead, but Baylor went on to score 15 unanswered points and closed out the third quarter, 64-28.
Lusby was the leading scorer for UIW with 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting to go along with pair of free throws.
The Cardinals host their home opener on Monday, November 11 against Nelson University at 6:30 p.m.
