Women's Soccer Set to Face Pair of Texas Teams

SAN ANTONIO - The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team has two games against two Texas Southland foes this weekend. The Cardinals will travel to Stephen F. Austin (SFA) on Friday, October 18th at 5:30 p.m. and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Sunday, October 20th at 1 p.m.  

UIW  

  • The Cardinals sit in 6th place in the Southland Conference (SLC) standings and are 6-6-2 on the 2024 season and 3-3 in SLC play. 

  • UIW has won three of their last four matches and are coming off a weekend where they split two SLC matchups, a 1-0 loss to UTRGV and a 2-1 win over Houston Christian. 

  • Graduate Student Sierra Wannamaker scored the game winner against Houston Christian and has scored two goals in the last three matches. She is tied for the most goals on the team this season (3) with sophomore Alex Knutson.  

  • Sophomore goalkeeper Erica Defferding has produced four shutouts in net this season and has 62 saves in 13 starts. 

Scouting the Lumberjacks 

  • SFA is 8-2-2 overall and 5-1 in SLC play following a 2-0 win over Southeastern Louisiana and a dominating 7-0 home win over Texas A&M Corpus Christi on October 13th.  

  • These wins helped the Lumberjacks sweep the SLC Player of the Week awards. Freshman Alex Bayouth won offensive player of the week, junior Ella Morgan won defensive player of the week and freshman Sierra McCluer won goalkeeper of the week.. 

  • SFA is currently riding a four-game winning streak and sit alone atop the SLC standings. The Lumberjacks also lead the SLC in shots (240), points (117), goals (43), assists (31) and goals allowed (7). 

  • Graduate Student Maddie Bowers leads the team in points with five goals and six assists on the season. 

Scouting the Islanders 

  • Texas A&M – Corpus Christi is 5-3-5 on the year and 2-1-2 in SLC play following a 7-0 defeat to SFA. 

  • Prior to their defeat to the Lumberjacks, the Islanders were the last remaining unbeaten team in the SLC and currently sit in 7th in the conference standings.  

  • Senior Morgan Westbury leads the team in points (9) and has three goals and three assists on the year. 

  • Zoe Theriot, a senior goalkeeper, has recorded 65 saves in 13 starts.
