Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 5-1, in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon. The win gives the Cardinals the second seed in next week's Southland Conference tournament.
The Cardinals got it done on the mound today, allowing just one run on seven hits. Starter Carson Rollins picked up the win, pitching five innings, allowing one run on five hits. Steve Hayward finished with a four-inning save, allowing no runs on two hits with five strikeouts. Five Cardinal batters recorded two hits in the win, and four Cardinals recorded an RBI each.
Grant Randall scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Islanders got on the board in the third, tying the game at 1-1 on a single up the middle.
Hernan Yanez picked up an RBI single in the fifth to put the Cardinals ahead 2-1.
Rey Mendoza extended the Cardinal's lead on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to bring the score to 3-1.
The Cardinals got two insurance runs in the ninth on two RBI singles to extend their lead to 5-1. The Islanders failed to score in the ninth to bring the final score to 5-1.
