CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, 9-6, in game one of the three-game series on Thursday night. 

Rey Mendoza led all Cardinals in hits with three in game one. Hernan Yanez and Wilson Ehrhardt each had two hits in the win. Mendoza also led the team in RBIs with three. 

After a scoreless first, the Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second. Jamey Richey drove in two on a two-run double, and Ehrhardt drove in two more on a two-run homer. 

Mendoza singled in a run in the top of the fourth to extend the Cardinals lead to 5-0.  

Warren Laster picked up an RBI in the fifth and the Cardinals extended their lead to 7-0 in the sixth on a fielder's choice.  

The Islanders got on the board in the seventh, scoring two to bring the score to 7-2. 

Mendoza crushed a two-run homer in the eighth to extend the Cardinal's lead to 9-2. Later in the inning, the Islanders scored on a solo homer to bring the score to 9-3. 

The Islanders wouldn't go down without a fight, scoring three runs in the ninth. The Islanders would leave the bases loaded to end the game, bringing the final score to 9-6.
