SAN ANTONIO – Rey Mendoza of the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team belted a solo home run to walk-off McNeese State in game one of the three-game series at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
Today's hero, Mendoza, led the Cardinals in hits with three and in RBIs with two. Wilson Ehrhardt also drove in two runs in the come from behind win.
The Cardinals got on the board first in the bottom of the first on a Jimmy De Leon RBI single to bring the score to 1-0.
The Cowboys responded in the second with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the inning, Tony DeJesus singled up the middle to allow the Cardinals to retake the lead at 2-1.
McNeese took its first lead in the third to bring the score to 3-2. Later in the inning, Hernan Yanez singled in a run to tie the game at 3-3.
The Cowboys drove in three runs in the top of the fourth to retake the lead, 6-3.
McNeese took its largest lead in the fifth, driving in a run on a solo home run to go up 7-3. Later in the inning, Mendoza smoked a solo home run over the wall to bring the score to 7-4.
After two scoreless innings the Cardinals came roaring back, tying the game in the bottom of the eighth. Ehrhardt drove in two runs on a two-run triple and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 7-7.
Mendoza only needed to see one pitch in the ninth, sending it over the wall to give the Cardinals the 8-7 win.
