HAMMOND, La. – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Southeastern Louisiana University, 11-1, on Sunday to win the series 2-1. The Cardinals continue to climb the Southland Conference standings as the Lions were tied for second place before today's game.
Wilson Ehrhardt and Jimmy De Leon led the charge offensively, leading the team in hits with three apiece. De Leon drove in five runs to lead the Cardinals, while Ehrhardt drove in three.
De Leon drove in the Cardinals' first run in the top of the first on an RBI single to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the second on a fielder's choice and a two-run homer from Ehrhardt.
After a scoreless third, the Lions got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single.
The Cardinals quickly responded in the next half inning with De Leon picking up his second RBI single of the game to bring the score to 5-1.
After two scoreless innings, the Cardinals poured it on in the eighth and ninth innings to take a commanding lead. A two-run triple by Grant Randall and an RBI double by Ehrhardt brought the score to 8-1 entering the home half of the eighth.
De Leon capped off his afternoon with a three-run homer in the top of the eighth to extend UIW's lead to 11-1.
Micah Berens and Luis Rodriguez combined to pitch a one-run game, allowing just seven hits while also striking out seven batters in the win.
