GRAMBLING, La. – Eight runs in the fifth inning propelled the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team to a 19-3 victory over Grambling State University on Wednesday night at Wilbert Ellis Field.
The Cardinals' bats exploded on the night, totaling 17 hits on the game with all nine Cardinals recording a hit.
Jimmy De Leon drove in three runs with four RBI's while
Rey Mendoza added four runs and four RBIs.
Seth Higdon pitched the first five innings before
Luis Rodriguez came in to close out the game.
Neither the Tigers nor the Cardinals scored until the third inning. Mendoza's seventh homer of the year lifted UIW to a 3-0 edge before
Warren Laster scored De Leon and
Sam Tormos plated
Tony DeJesus (5-0). A Tiger homer would cut the lead to 5-2 to end the inning.
Eight runs in the fifth inning brought the score to 13-2 as the Cardinals batted around. The Tigers plated one runner in the bottom of the inning to head into the sixth, 13-3.
Five more runs came in the sixth off a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly, and a homer from De Leon (18-3).
Alec Carr secured the victory in the seventh with a home run to left field to end the game, 19-3.
