SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team clinched its fourth straight conference series win defeating Lamar, 5-1 Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. The win gives UIW an 8-3 record in conference games and a 2-0 series lead over Lamar. 

Warren Laster led UIW in hits with three in the win. Center fielder Sterling Sutcliffe led the team in RBIs with three. On the mound, starter Isaiah Zavala picked up a quality start, pitching 6.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out seven batters. Steve Hayward finished off the game picking up his fourth save of the season, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out three. 

Lamar took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI single to left-center field. 

Sutcliffe gave UIW its first lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer over the right field wall to bring the score to 2-1.  

Hernan Yanez led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot over the left field wall for his second home run of the season. Later in the inning, Rey Mendoza scored on a groundout to extend UIW's lead to 4-1.  

UIW added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a run on a wild pitch to extend their lead to 5-1. 

Lamar would strand a runner in scoring position in the top of the ninth to end the game with a final score of 5-1.
