HAMMOND – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Southeastern Louisiana University, 5-2, on Saturday at Pat Kenelly Diamond.
Five Cardinals tallied two hits each in the win. Alec Carr led the team in RBIs with three and three Cardinal pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.
The Cardinals took an early lead in the top of the first driving in two runs to take a 2-0 lead. Rey Mendoza doubled to right field to drive in one while Jimmy De Leon picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice. Later in the inning, the Lions pulled within one on an RBI double to bring the score to 2-1.
Carr extended the Cardinals' lead on an RBI single to bring the score to 3-1.
After two scoreless innings, the Lions singled in a run in the bottom of the fifth to pull within one, 3-2.
The Cardinals immediately responded in the top of the sixth with Carr driving in two runs on a two-run single to take a 5-2 lead.
The score would remain the same the rest of the way, giving the Cardinals the win and tying the series at 1-1.
