SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Southern University, 11-4, at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B on Saturday to clinch the series victory heading into the final game on Sunday. 

Rey Mendoza and Hernan Yanez led the Cardinals in hits with three each, and Alec Carr and Mendoza each had three RBIs to lead the Cardinals. Isaiah Zavala finished the game allowing just one run on four hits while striking out ten. 

The Cardinals got on the board in the first to take a 2-0 lead. Carr and Yanez each picked up an RBI in the inning.  

The Jaguars tied the game up at 2-2 in the top of the second on a passed ball and RBI single.  

Carr and Yanez struck again in the bottom of the third as they each picked up an RBI single to bring the score to 4-2.  

The Jaguars responded in the top of the fourth with a solo home run to pull within one, 4-3.  

Carr recorded his third RBI of the game in the bottom of the fifth to extend the Cardinals lead to 5-3.  

Southern drove in a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single to center to bring the score to 5-4.  

The Jaguars kept it close through seven, but the Cardinals hung six runs in the bottom of the eighth to take an 11-4 lead. Warren Laster drove in the innings first run on a fielder's choice. Jamey Richy came in to pinch hit and picked up a two-run single and Mendoza concluded the inning with a bases clearing three-run double.  

The Jaguars had no answers in the ninth as Steve Hayward came into the game to shut the door.
